The 15th World Oceans Day and the 16th China Ocean Day were celebrated Thursday with the theme of "Protecting the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature in the marine ecosystem". As a province boasting a coastline of 954 kilometers and jurisdiction over a sea area of 37500 square kilometers, Jiangsu’s marine economy continues to gain new momentum, and the utilization and protection of marine resources have significantly increased.
In recent years, Jiangsu has put more efforts on the protection of the ocean, focusing on both restoration and cultivation. In 2022, the proportion of excellent seawater area in Jiangsu exceeded the national assessment target by 25.5 percentage points. The Jiangsu Marine Economic Development Index was 116.3, an increase of 2.7% compared to the previous year, and the total marine product reached a new level of 900 billion yuan. Jiangsu’s shipbuilding and marine industry ranks first in the country, and the scale of offshore wind power in the province also tops the nation. Jiangsu is striving toward a bigmaritimeprovincewith rich marineresources.
At the same time, regions across Jiangsu have also carried out series of promotional activities on the theme of “Oceans Day” with rich content and diverse forms, calling on the whole society to pay attention to the ocean, and better protect the ocean. At the main venue of the “Oceans Day” activity in Jiangsu Province, the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and other departments awarded the Marine Science Popularization Education Base a license, issuing the proposal to protect marine biodiversity to further popularize marine knowledge and promote marine ecological civilization.
