The Nanjing Giant Bao"en Temple Site Museum showcased over 60 exquisite works of cultural relics on Monday. The exhibits include colored glazed dragon patterned bricks, daily artifacts unearthed from the Giant Bao"en Temple, and bronze mirrors unearthed from the underground palace of Changgan Temple in the Song Dynasty.
The four high relief dragon patterned colorful glazed tiles on display were all unearthed at Saihong Bridge in Nanjing. Even after hundreds of years of erosion, the entire glazed tile still maintains its unique luster, with the dragon body, longan, and dragon claw being lifelike.
“This high relief represents the national level at that time. Its artistic nature accounts for the reason why the glazed tower of Giant Bao"en Temple can shock the world and be comparable to other architectural wonders in the Middle Ages. These important glass components also prove that the vicinity of Saihong Bridge may be the location of the core kiln of the Glazed Tower at that time”, Wang Xingping, a staff with Giant Bao"en Temple Site Museum, said.
The site of Giant Bao"en Temple was recognized by the expert group of the National Cultural Heritage Administration as "the most complete ancient temple site in China with the highest specification and largest scale".
This exhibition also showcases a batch of cultural relics such as copper mirrors, copper coins, and gilded spherical boxes unearthed from the underground palace of Changgan Temple in the Song Dynasty, including some artifacts from ancient India, which has provided physical historical materials for studying the Silk Road and cultural exchanges between China and the West.
