East China’s Jiangsu province has completed 93% of its rice transplanting. The recent continuous rainfall has exerted a significant impact on agricultural production in some areas, and farmers are making every effort to drain water in the fields and seize the rainfall gaps to accelerate rice transplanting.
Last Friday to Sunday, rainstorm hit Nantong and Suzhou, subjecting farmlands to floods. To reduce the impact of rainfall on rice transplanting, local agricultural technicians went to rural areas to guide farmers in field drainage and prepare for rice transplanting.
“Some ridges and water surfaces have all been leveledand a small dam in the field cannot drain water in time.We need to remove it in a timely manner to ensure that the seedling heads of the rice paddiesare higher than the water surface”,Qu Guohua, Owner of a family farm in Tongzhou District, Nantong City, said.
“If there is too much water in the fields,it is necessary to drain the water as soon as possibleto prevent water from flooding the core of the seedlings. For dry land crops,it is important to quickly go to the fields to check whether the fields are flooded”, Wu Yongjun, Head of Crop Cultivation Station, Tongzhou District, Nantong City, said.
Continuous rainfall has also ensured sufficient water for rice transplanting in most areas. Farmers in Lianyungang and Yancheng rushed to seize the rainfall gap and put in all their efforts to operate agricultural machinery and transplant rice seedlings.
Sanhe Town of Hongze District, Huai"an City organized nearly 100 villagers to set up a service team to provide family farms with plowing and seedling planting services.
Agricultural technicians instructed farmers in water and fertilizer management after rice transplanting to ensure seamless connection between summer planting and summer management.
“We have arranged for 14 rice transplantersand 12 rotary tillers to provide humanand mechanical services for the village cooperativesand family farmsso as to lay a solid foundationfor the harvest of autumn crops”, Wang Chenggang, Secretary of the General Party Branch of Siba Village, Sanhe Town, Hongze District, Huai’an City, said.
The meteorological department predicts that Jiangsu will experience two more significant precipitation this week. The agricultural department suggests that various regions seize the gap between rainfall, accelerate summer planting, clear ditches, and strengthen fertilizer and water management to promote crop recovery.
