East China’s Jiangsu province is exploring diversified new measures for elderly care and assistance and accelerating the upgrading of elderly care services so as to ensure that the elderly share the fruits of reform and development, and enjoy happy later years.

At around 9 o"clock in the morning, in the Sunshine Elderly Apartment in Nantong, Lu Xia, a care worker, was turning the elderly over, massaging them, accompanying them for walks, and exercising their muscles and bones.

Lu Xia has been working as a nurse worker for over 7 years and recently has been awarded the Senior Certificate of Elderly Care Staff.

Nantong has attached great importance to the training of elderly care service care workers by establishing 5 practical training bases. In the past three years, 15 thousand elderly care workers have been trained.

Nantong has established and improved a job subsidy system for employees of elderly care service institutions, providing entry subsidies ranging from 30 thousand to 50 thousand yuan to college graduates who have joined elderly care service institutions and work in nursing positions.

Elderly care workers who meet relevant requirements can receive a one-time vocational skill level certification subsidy of up to 5000 yuan.

In order to meet the needs of the elderly, Yangzhou University for the Elderly has started courses in communities and rural areas, and offered over 20 online courses.

Yangzhou University for the Elderly has also collaborated with multiple communities to provide training on the use of smartphones for the elderly. Yangzhou University for the Elderly now has 2 campuses and 1 teaching site, with 35 subjects and over 10 thousand registered students in the spring semester.

“By the end of 2026, we will establish teaching centers for elderly universities in eligible community party and mass service centers, ensuring that the elderly in the city have access to a 15-minute learning service circle”, Tang Xiaoyue, Deputy Director of the Yangzhou Municipal Party Committee for Retired Cadres, Vice President of Yangzhou University for the Elderly, said.
